She now promotes a more sensible approach, but keeping the weight off isn’t easy for anyone, even Oprah, as evidenced by the January 2009 cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, which juxtaposes her former 160-pound self with her current 40-pounds-heavier self.
 
Her personal struggles aside, Oprah does offer some sound advice on general healthful eating habits and exercise plans. Dr. David L. Katz and Dr. Mehmet Oz, both resident heath experts on The Oprah Winfrey Show and columnists in Oprah’s magazine, have a slew of credentials to back the nutrition tips they give to Oprah audiences. Here are five of their best tips:

1. Nutrient-rich foods: Katz frequently emphasizes the importance of basing a diet around nutrient-rich foods rather than empty calories. His recent feature on Oprah’s Web site suggested substituting apples for potato chips, fish for red meat and whole-grain bread for white bread.
 
Lona Sandon, food and nutrition expert for the American Dietetic Association (ADA), says she also recommends this type of diet, and adds that lean proteins and quality fat sources like nuts, seeds, vegetable oils can be added as side dishes to a diet based on fruits and vegetables. “You don’t need a special berry or a $40 bottle of juice to get the high anti-oxidants,” Sandon says. “You just need to go to the grocery store and spend some time in the produce aisle.”


 
2. Identifying why/when you eat: In an Oprah episode tackling America’s obesity problem, Dr. Oz helped 16 obese teens look for the emotional roots of their eating disorder.
 
ADA spokesperson David Grotto says he commends Oprah for noting that the obesity epidemic is not simply caused by overeating: “She digs behind what causes that overeating—and it’s not just because we are hungry all the time,” Grotto says.
 
3. Setting food boundaries: In January 2009, Oprah introduced her new diet plan, which included not eating after 7:30 p.m. Grotto says that though this strategy is not a direct solution for keeping weight in check, setting a cutoff time for eating does have some merit. “It’s about purposely reducing our intake at that hour when we are less active,” Grotto says. “But it really comes down to what ends up on the plate and in our stomachs at the end of the day.”
 
4. Limiting portion sizes: Oz says calorie restriction is the No. 1 way doctors say we can extend longevity, and caloric intake should be about getting the most “bang for your buck.” Similarly, the ADA’s Sandon said that a key concept to gaining a healthy relationship with food is to eat smaller portions throughout the day, including three meals and two snacks. “It does come down to … asking yourself, ‘Do I really need that much?’” Sandon says.

 
5. Dieting for life: Permanently altering habits requires mental readiness and proper planning, Katz reminds readers of O. He recommends making a list of the benefits to continuing a healthy eating plan to make dieting a true lifestyle change. Sandon also believes that a truly effective diet must last a lifetime: “Anyone can reduce calories for a certain amount of time, but if they haven’t really made a lifestyle change, rather just some rules and restrictions, then the weight loss doesn’t last over time,” Sandon says. “It comes down to changing the way you eat.”

Remember the old saying "you are what you eat"  or "what’s eating you", because maybe something really is. In today’s food industry, it’s pretty much true.  Our society has forgotten to stay true to their bodies as far as what they consume.  We’ve gotten used to propagandized food, forgetting that they spray the ground with pesticides,  herbicides and synthetic fertilizers.  It’s affected by the air around it and the water it’s given to grow. Yum! Thankfully mankind caught on pretty quickly what was going on. There’s a reason our society is so ill. Herbs For Those With Stomach Ache Ulcers And Heartburn

What is the biggest mistake people make about stomach ache?

Calling it stomach ache. The stomach (fortunately) does not ache. Usually when people say their stomach aches, they mean they have a gas pain. Gas pain can be severe pain. My friends who work in emergency rooms say you wouldn’t believe how many people come in for what turns out to be gas pain.

What herbal allies would you recommend for those dealing with:

HEARTBURN?

Herbalists, myself included, see heartburn as a lack of HCL (hydrochloric acid) in the stomach, instead of the prevalent opinion, that it is caused by too much acid. So instead of trying to turn off production of HCL (as drugs attempt to do), herbalists seek herbs that increase HCL, such as dandelion (Taraxacum officinale). In my book Healing Wise I devote an entire chapter to dandelion, with lots of recipes and ideas on how to use it.

You can use any part of dandelion: the flowers make dandelion wine, you can cook the greens, or eat them in salad, you can even cook the root, or make a vinegar with it (my favorite), or tincture it. Some people make a coffee substitute from roasted dandelion root. Any way you take it seems to work. (A standard dose would be 10-20 drops of the root tincture taken at the beginning of the meal.) Dandelion, and its friend chicory (Cichorium intybus), which is a fine substitute should you have access to one and not the other, are true tonics. That is, the more you take them, the less you need them. You don’t have to keep taking this remedy forever. After 3-6 weeks you’ll find you need it less and less.

In Europe it is customary to take bitters before a big meal. Most mild bitters, such as yellow dock (Rumex crispus), cronewort/mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris), gentian (Gentiana lutea), barberry (Berberis vulgaris), and Oregon grape are liver tonics and digestives. They aid in digestion, and decrease risk of heartburn, by increasing production of both HCL and bile.

A few more tips for those who suffer from heartburn:

  • Eat less at each meal
  • Stay upright after eating; no lounging around or sleeping
  • Avoid eating late at night
  • Reduce the amount of coffee you drink
  • Don’t overdo it with the orange juice, either
  • Use slippery elm lozenges (available in health food stores) for immediate relief from heartburn

2B. ULCERS?

The herbs that increase HCL in the stomach, such as dandelion, also decrease ulcers, which are the result of a bacterial infection. When stomach acid is increased, that bacteria has a harder time of it and is less likely to cause ulcers.

Amusing isn’t it that medical science says "OK, there must be a mind/body connection, because gastrointestinal ulcers are caused by stress"; only to find out what my herbal teachers taught me long ago: bacteria cause ulcers.

Here’s one way to kill that bacteria (besides taking drugs): Get a food grater with a very fine grating side. Grate a large potato as finely as possible. Into another bowl, grate to of a cabbage. Let them sit for 10-15 minutes, until liquid starts to collect in the bottom of the bowls. Use your hand, or something hard, to press and squeeze the potato until it is dry. Throw away the pulp and keep the liquid. Repeat with the cabbage. Don’t use a juicer. There are plant starches that you don’t get when you use a juicer. A food processor is ok.

Put the liquids in separate jars in the refrigerator, taking 1-3 tablespoonfuls 2-3 times a day. The more severe the symptoms, the larger and more frequent the dose would be. I expect symptomatic relief within 36-48 hours. But this remedy is safe to take for weeks at a time if needed.

If you can’t make the potato liquid, you can buy potato starch and mix it with water. Instead of the cabbage liquid, you could buy coleslaw. It isn’t the same as grating the potato and the cabbage, but it is better than nothing. And even if it doesn’t work as fast, if that is what is available to you, use it.

2C. STOMACH ACHE?

To me, this means gas pain. Herbs that relieve gas pain are called "carminatives" because they make you "sing" (carmen). Many aromatic herbs are carminatives, especially the seeds of members of the Apiaceae family including dill seed, caraway seeds, fennel seeds, anise seeds, coriander seeds, and cumin seeds. Just put a big spoonful in a cup, cover well with boiling water, steep five minutes, sweeten if you like, and drink.

Ginger is another readily-available carminative. Especially warming to the gut. You can make a tea with powdered ginger, or use up to a tablespoon of fresh ginger per cup of water for a strong brew. Ginger works best sweetened with honey. NASA found it would counter the nausea of space-sickness. You can also buy crystallized or candied ginger to take traveling with you.

The fastest remedy for gas pain is two capsules of acidophilus. I expect pain relief in 5-10 minutes. And I don’t pay much attention to the expiration date on it. I keep mine in the refrigerator, and use them so rarely that I often have a bottle for ten years – and they still work.

Eating yogurt< 1a88 /B> helps prevent gas pain, and can be used as a remedy, but it is not as fast as the acidophilus. A quart of yogurt a week is a good goal. And buy plain yogurt. Long term problems with food digestion can lead to some very serious health issues.

When the gall bladder is diseased or has some other kind of malfunctioning problem, bile production is affected in an adverse way. Apart from disease, weight concerns are also responsible for gall bladder health problems.

People who are obese or who are attempting rather drastically designed fat-free diets to lose weights are especially vulnerable to gall bladder problems. The exocrine pancreas secretes pancreatic juice that aids in digestion of food in the small intestine, whereas the endocrine pancreas produces an insulin hormone that regulates the glucose metabolism in the body.

Pancreatic cancer is a malignant tumor in the tissues of the pancreas. It is also called exocrine cancer. Pancreatic cancer is more common among males and in elderly people. Certain factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, diet, gingivitis, chronic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreatic tissues) and diabetes increases the risk of pancreatic cancer. Pancreas is one of the important organs of the digestive system, which is located adjacent to the small intestine behind the stomach in the upper part of the abdomen.

The main function of pancreas is to produce certain enzymes, required for the digestion process. It produces the hormone insulin that controls blood glucose levels. Pancreatic cancer results from uncontrolled growth of malignant cells.

There are two types of pancreatic cancer; exocrine pancreatic cancer or adenocarcinoma and islet cell pancreatic cancer or endocrine cancer. Pancreatic cancer usually spreads very rapidly through the lymphatic system to other organs such as lungs, liver, bones etc. It is rarely detected in its early stage. That’s why it is one of the leading causes of cancer death. It is reported that approximately 30,000 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States.

Certain factors such as obesity, smoking, chronic pancreatitis, long-term diabetes, age, gender, family history and certain hereditary disorders such as hereditary nonpolyposis colon cancer, hereditary pancreatitis and multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 syndrome can increase the risk of pancreatic cancer. Symptoms of pancreatic cancer usually appear in the advanced stage of the disease.

No symptoms appear in the early stage of cancer and hence, pancreatic cancer is referred to as a silent disease. Some common symptoms of pancreatic cancer are pain in the upper abdomen and in the back, nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss and weakness. Pancreatic cancer can also cause jaundice, digestive problems and muscle spasms, dizziness and diarrhea due to excessive production of insulin.

How Is Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosed?

An accurate diagnosis of pancreatic cancer in the early stage is very essential in order to seek immediate medical treatment. Certain tests and investigations are carried out to diagnose pancreas cancer including blood tests such as determination of levels of serum bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase and certain imaging tests such as ultrasound, MRI scan, CT scan, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).

Stages of Pancreas Cancer

Once pancreatic cancer is diagnosed, staging of the cancer is done with the help of X-ray, CT scan, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and bone scan. Pancreatic cancer can be staged in three broad categories such as respectable, locally advanced and metastatic. Staging of pancreatic cancer can be done in a different way such as stage 0, stage I to stage IV. In stage 0, abnormal cells can be found in the pancreatic lining. This condition is also known as carcinoma in situ. In stage I, cancer is developed and found in the pancreas only. In stage II, cancer may spread to nearby organs and lymph nodes. In stage III, cancer may spread to major blood vessels and nearby lymph nodes. In stage IV, cancer may spread to other distant organs such as lungs, liver and peritoneal cavity.

Treatment for Pancreas Cancer

Treatment for pancreas cancer is decided depending upon the location and stage of the cancer. The treatment option is selected on the basis of age and overall health of the patient and patient’s personal preference. Cancer treatment is aimed at removing the cancer when possible or preventing further growth of the cancer causing more harm. If pancreatic cancer is diagnosed in its advanced stage and any treatment option to remove the cancer is not possible, then treatment is given to reduce the symptoms and increase the comfort level of the patient. Various treatment options for pancreatic cancer include medications, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and targeted drug therapy. Locally advanced pancreatic cancer can be treated with a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy or with chemotherapy only. Chemotherapy is the fundamental treatment for locally advanced or metastatic pancreatic cancer.

Surgery: Complete removal of cancer with surgery is the only way to cure pancreatic cancer. The localized pancreatic cancer can be removed with surgery and hence considered as resectable cancer. If cancer has spread to other organs, blood vessels or lymph nodes, then surgery cannot be a treatment option. In case of resectable cancer, surgery is carried out to remove tumors in the pancreatic head or tumors in the pancreatic body and tail.

When pancreatic cancer is developed in the pancreatic head, a Whipple procedure or pancreatoduodenectomy is recommended. This surgery involves removal of pancreatic head, duodenum (a portion of small intestine) as well as gallbladder and part of bile duct. It may involve removal of a part of the stomach as well. There may be a risk of bleeding and infection. Some people with Whipple surgery may experience vomiting, nausea and temporary diabetes. Distal pancreatectomy is performed to remove the tail or the tail and a small portion of body of the pancreas. There may also be the removal of the spleen.

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy involves the use of various drugs to kill the malignant cells. In this therapy, drugs can be taken orally or injected intravenously. Chemotherapy can be combined with radiation therapy, known as chemoradiation. It can be used to treat pancreatic cancer, which has spread only to nearby organs, but not involving distant organs. In case of advanced pancreas cancer, chemotherapy can be used in combination with targeted drug therapy.

Targeted Drug Therapy: This therapy involves the use of drugs that target certain abnormalities in the cancer cells. Erlotinib is one of the targeted drugs, which prevents the chemicals that promote growth and division of cancer cells.

Medications: Certain chemotherapy drugs can be used as a part of pancreatic cancer treatment. Gemcitabine is used to treat metastatic pancreatic cancer, which directly targets malignant cells. Fluorouracil is given intravenously in combination with radiation therapy. Capecitabine is taken orally and generally used with radiation therapy. Some drugs such as cetuximab ,bevacizumab and vatalanib are used in combination with gemcitabine. Pancrelipase is recommended to improve pancreatic function after the surgical removal of the affected portion of pancreas. A variety of pain relievers can be used to control pain and discomfort.

Radiation Therapy: Radiation therapy focuses on killing the cancer cells to minimize the risk of returning or spreading of cancer and treating the tumors that are not surgically removed. Radiation therapy involves the use of high-energy beams in order to destroy malignant cells. Radiation therapy can be given in combination with chemotherapy before or after surgery. Radiation therapy is typically given 5 days a week for about 6 weeks. Some side effects of this therapy are diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue and skin irritation.

Biological Therapy: It is also called as Biological Response Modifier (BRM) therapy or immunotherapy. It involves the use of a patient’s immune system to fight cancer. Body’s natural defenses are restored or promoted by using the substances that are made in the laboratory or made by the body.

Clinical Trial: Clinical trial involves the study of new drugs, new radiation treatments or new approaches to surgery. Some advanced treatments that are currently under investigation in clinical trials include the use of drugs called angiogenesis inhibitors to stop cancer growth by preventing the cancer cells to use new blood vessels. Pancreatic cancer vaccines can be used to enhance the immune system and promote it to attack a specific protein secreted by cancer cells.

Although, these treatment options are helpful in reducing the symptoms of pancreatic cancer, it is better to adopt some preventive measures. You can minimize the risk of pancreatic cancer by maintaining a healthy body weight, having a nutritious, healthy diet and regular exercises and by stopping unhealthy habits like smoking. After all, prevention is always better than cure, isn’t it?

Acid Reflux Disorder: Cause And Cure

Acid reflux, gastric reflux, GERD, (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease) are the many names heartburn has been given. Even though they all share many of the same traits, there are specific medical conditions that can be found in each.

Acid reflux or acid disorder reflux is a disorder of the digestive tract.

Acid disorder reflux gives the unfortunate sufferer a burning sensation in their chest and stomach. This painful inflammation is the result of hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid is used by the stomach to digest food.

When the stomach and the esophagus canal is not separated by a mechanism known as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter, then the stomach acids backup into the esophagus. This refluxing motion causes an irritation to the sensitive tissues in the lower esophagus area.

Generally the esophageal sphincter muscle functions normally. It contracts and closes the esophagus area after you have had a meal. This closure prevents the stomach acid from rising up into the esophagus during the digestion process. However there are times when the Lower Esophageal Sphincter does not operate properly, then acid from the stomach reflux into the esophagus. This results in the condition that is medically known as gastroesophageal reflux disorder or acid disorder reflux.

The reasons for acid reflux disorder reflux are varied.

However they often occur with other health issues like allergies, enzyme deficiencies, gallbladder problems, hiatal hernia, stress and heartburn ulcers.

Food and beverage consumption is another possible cause. It is recommended that you avoid consumption of alcohol, chocolate, citrus fruits and drinks as these are known to relax the Lower Esophageal Sphincter or LES as it is called.

Coffee, tea and colas which contain caffeine should be eliminated from your diet as well. These beverages contain a substance called theobromine.

Fried and fatty foods have a tendency to slow down the digestion process. Eating large amounts of food at any time of the day can put a lot of pressure on your stomach muscles. When the food is kept in your stomach for a long period, there is increased pressure to the stomach muscles. This pressure build-up can weaken the LES.

As this is the valve that protects your esophagus from the stomach you need to take care that this weakened conditioned does not allow the digested food acids to pass into your esophagus. Therefore you should eat small meals throughout the day.

By consuming large amounts of food, you cause the LES to relax and reflux food into the esophagus leading to acid disorder reflux.

Tomatoes and tomato-based products like sauces and tomato juice will also cause the LES to relax. These tomato-based products lead to an increase in the production of stomach acid. When they reflux into the esophagus, the acidity levels cause acid disorder reflux.

By watching what you eat and taking care of your health, you stand a better chance of avoiding acid disorder reflux from entering your life and causing you pain. Besides, it’s always better in the long run to eat healthy anyway.

1. Clear Liquid Diet
Purpose:
relieve thirst and help maintain fluid balance
Use:
post-surgically and following acute vomiting or diarrhea

carbonated beverages; coffee (caffeinated and decaff); tea; flavored drinks, strained fruit sugar; popsicles; commercially prepared clear liquids; and hard candy
Foods Avoided:
milk and milk products, fruit juices with pulp

2. Full-Liquid Diet
Purpose:
provide an adequately nutritious diet for patients who cannot chew or who are too ill to do so
Use:
acute infection with fever, GI upsets, after surgery as a progression from clear liquids
Foods allowed:
clear liquids, milk drinks, cook cereals, custards, ice cream, sherbets, eggnog, all strained fruit juices, creamed vegetable soups, puddings, mashed potatoes, instant breakfast drinks, yogurt, mild cheese sauce or pureed meat, and seasoning
Foods avoided:
nuts, seeds, coconut, fruit, jam, and marmalade

3. Soft diet
Purpose:
provide adequate nutrition for those who have troubled chewing
Use:
patient with no teeth or ill-fitting dentures; transition from full-liquid to general diet; and for those who cannot tolerate highly seasoned, fried or raw foods following acute infections or gastrointestinal disturbances such as gastric ulcer or cholelithiasis
Foods allowed:
very tender minced, ground, baked broiled, roasted, stewed, or creamed beef, lamb, veal, liver, poultry, or fish; crisp bacon or sweet bread; cooked vegetables; pasta; all fruit juices; soft raw fruits; soft bread and cereals; all desserts that are soft and cheeses
Foods avoided:
coarse-whole grain cereals and bread; nuts; raisins; coconut; fruits with small seeds; fried foods; high fat gravies or sauces; spicy salad dressings; pickled meat; fish, or poultry; strong cheeses; brown or wild rice; raw vegetables; as well as lima beans and corn; spices such as horseradish, mustard, and catsup; and popcorn

4. Soft-Restricted diet
Purpose:
reduce sodium content in the tissue and promote excretion of water
Use:
heart failure, hypertension, renal disease, cirrhosis, toxemia of pregnancy, and cortisone therapy
Modifications:
mildly restrictive 2g sodium diet to extremely restricted 200mg sodium diet
Foods avoided:
table salt; all commercial soups, including bouillons; gravy, catsup, mustard, meat sauce and soy sauce; buttermilk, ice cream, and sherbet; sodas; beet greens, carrots, celery, chard, sauerkraut and spinach; all canned vegetables; frozen peas.
all baked products containing salt, baking powder, or canned shellfish; all cheeses; smoked or commercially prepared meats; salted butter or margarine; bacon, olives; and commercially prepared salad dressings

5. Renal diet
Purpose:
control protein, potassium, sodium and fluid levels in the body
Use:
acute and chronic renal failure, hemodialysis
Foods allowed:
– high-biological proteins such as meat, fowl, fish, cheese, and dairy products – range between 20 and 60 mg/day
– vegetable such as cabbage, cucumber, and peas are lowest in potassium
– potassium is usually limited to 500 mg/day
– fluid intake is restricted to the daily volume plus 500 ml, which represents insensible water loss
– fluid intake measures water in fruit, vegetables, milk and meat
Foods avoided:
cereals, bread, macaroni, noodles, spaghetti, avocados, kidney beans, potato chips, raw fruit, yams, soybeans, nuts, gingerbread, apricots, bananas, figs, grapefruit, oranges, percolated coffee,, coca-cola, orange crush, sport drinks, and breakfast drinks such as Tang or Awake

6. High-Protein, High Carbohydrate diet
Purpose:
to correct large protein losses and raises the level of blood albumin. May be modified to include low-fat, low sodium, and low cholesterol diets
Use:
burns, hepatitis, cirrhosis, pregnancy, hyperthyroidism, mononucleosis, protein deficiency due to poor eating habits, geriatric patient with poor intake; nephritis, liver and gallbladder disorder
Foods allowed:
general diet with added protein
Foods avoided:
restrictions depend on modifications added to the diet. The modifications are determined by the patients condition

7. Purine-Restricted diet
Purpose:
designed to reduce intake of uric-acid producing foods
Use:
high uric acid retention, uric acid renal stones and gout
Foods allowed:
general diet plus 2-3 quarts of liquid daily
Foods avoided:
cheese containing spices of nuts, fried eggs, meat, liver, seafood, lentils, dried peas and beans, broth, boullion, gravies, oatmeal and whole wheat, pasta, noodles, and alcoholic beverages. Limited quantities of meat, fish and seafood allowed

8. Bland diet
Purpose:
Provision of diet low in fiber, roughage, mechanical irritants, and chemical stimulants
Use:
gastritis, hyperchlorhydria (excess hydrochloric acid), functional G.I. disorders, gastric atony, diarrhea, spastic constipation, biliary indigestion, and hiatus hernia
Foods avoided:
– fried foods, including eggs, meat, fish, and seafood; cheese with added nuts or spices; commercially prepared luncheon meats; cured meats such as ham; gravies and sauces; raw vegetables
– potato skins; fruit juices with pulp; figs; raisins; fresh fruits; whole wheat; rye bread; bran cereals; rich pastries; pies; chocolate; jams with seeds; nuts; seasoned dressings; caffeinated coffee; strong tea; cocoa; alcoholic and carbonated beverages and pepper

9. Low fat, Cholesterol-Restricted diet
Purpose:
reduce hyperlipedimia, provide dietary treatment for malabsorption syndromes and patient having acute intolerance for fats
Use:
hyperlipedimia, atherosclerosis, pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, sprue, gastrectomy, massive resection of small intestine, and cholecystitis
Foods allowed:
nonfat milk; low-carbohydrate, low-fat vegetables; most fruits; breads; pastas; cornmeal; lean meats
Foods avoided:
– remember to avoid the five C’s of cholesterol-cookies, cream, cake, coconut, chocolate; whole milk or cream products, avocados, olives, commercially prepared baked goods such as donuts and muffins, poultry skin, highly marbled meats
– butter, ordinary margarines, olive olive, lard, pudding made with whole milk, ice cream, candies with chocolate, cream, sauces, gravies and commercially fried foods

10. Diabetic diet
Purpose:
maintain blood glucose as near as normal as possible; prevent or delay onset of diabetic complications
Use:
diabetic Mellitus
Foods allowed:
choose foods with low glycemic index compose of:
a. 45-55 fats
c. 10-25% CHON
– coffee, tea, broth, spices and flavoring can be used as desired
– exchange group include: milk, vegetable, fruits, starch/bread, meat (divided in lean, medium fat, and high fat), and fat exchanges
_ the number of exchanges allowed from each group is dependent on the total number of calories allowed
_ non-nutritive sweeteners (sorbitol) in moderation with controlled, normal weight diabetics
Food avoided:
concentrated sweets or regular soft drinks

11. Acid and Alkaline diet
Purpose:
furnish as well balance diet in which the total acid ash is greater than the total alkaline ash each day
Use:
retard the formation of renal calculi. The type of diet chosen depends on the laboratory analysis of the stone
Acid and Alkaline ash food groups:
a. Acid ash: meat, whole grains, eggs, cheese, cranberries, prunes, plums
b. Alkaline ash: milk, vegetables, fruits (except cranberries, prunes and plums)
c. Neutral: sugar, fats, beverages(coffee, tea)
Foods allowed:
– Breads: any, preferably whole grain; crackers; roll
– Cereals: any, preferable whole grains
desserts: angel food or sunshine cake; cookies made without baking powder or soda; cornstarch, pudding, cranberry desserts, ice cream, sherbet, plum or prune desserts; rice or tapioca pudding
– Fats: any, such as butter, margarine, salad dressings, crisco, spry, lard, salad oil, olive oil
– Fruits: cranberry, plums, prunes
– Meat, eggs, cheese: any meat, fish or fowl, two servings daily; at least one egg daily
– Potato substitutes: corn, hominy, lentils, macaroni, noodles, rice, spaghetti, vermicelli
– Soup: broth as desired; other soups from food allowed
– Sweets: cranberry and plum jelly; plain sugar candy
Miscellaneous: cream sauce, gravy, peanut butter, peanuts, popcorn, salt spices, vinegar, walnuts
Restricted foods:
no more than the amount allowed each day
1. Milk: 1 pint daily (may be used in other ways than as beverage)
2. Cream: 1/3 cup or less daily
3. Fruits: one serving of fruits daily ( in addition to the prunes, plums and cranberries)
4. Vegetable: including potatoes: two servings daily
5. Sweets; chocolate or candies, syrups
6. Miscellaneous: other nuts, olives, pickles

12. High-fiber diet
Purpose:
– soften the stool
– exercise digestive tract muscles
– speed passage of food through digestive tract to prevent exposure to cancer-causing agents in food
– lower blood lipids
– prevent sharp rise in glucose after eating
Use:
diabetes, hyperlipedimia, constipation, diverticulitis, anticarcinogenics (colon)
Foods allowed:
– recommended intake about 6g crude fiber daily
– all bran cereal
– watermelon, prunes, dried peaches, apple with skin; parsnip, peas, brussels, sprout, sunflower seeds

13. Low Residue diet
Purpose:
– reduce stool bulk and slow transit time
Use:
bowel inflammation during acute diverticulitis, or ulcerative colitis, preparation for bowel surgery, esophageal and intestinal stenosis
Foods allowed:
eggs; ground or well-cooked tender meat, fish, poultry; milk, cheeses; strained fruit juice (except prune): cooked or canned apples, apricots, peaches, pears; ripe banana; strained vegetable juice: canned, cooked, or strained asparagus, beets, green beans, pumpkin, squash, spinach; white bread; refined cereals (cream of wheat)
