What Oprah Gets Right On Dieting and Nutrition

Newsweek

By Brooke Brown

From Optifast to 21-day cleanses, Oprah Winfrey has been on plenty of fad diets in her day. She now promotes a more sensible approach, but keeping the weight off isn’t easy for anyone, even Oprah, as evidenced by the January 2009 cover of O, The Oprah Magazine, which juxtaposes her former 160-pound self with her current 40-pounds-heavier self.

Her personal struggles aside, Oprah does offer some sound advice on general healthful eating habits and exercise plans. Dr. David L. Katz and Dr. Mehmet Oz, both resident heath experts on The Oprah Winfrey Show and columnists in Oprah’s magazine, have a slew of credentials to back the nutrition tips they give to Oprah audiences. Here are five of their best tips:

1. Nutrient-rich foods: Katz frequently emphasizes the importance of basing a diet around nutrient-rich foods rather than empty calories. His recent feature on Oprah’s Web site suggested substituting apples for potato chips, fish for red meat and whole-grain bread for white bread.

Lona Sandon, food and nutrition expert for the American Dietetic Association (ADA), says she also recommends this type of diet, and adds that lean proteins and quality fat sources like nuts, seeds, vegetable oils can be added as side dishes to a diet based on fruits and vegetables. “You don’t need a special berry or a $40 bottle of juice to get the high anti-oxidants,” Sandon says. “You just need to go to the grocery store and spend some time in the produce aisle.”

2. Identifying why/when you eat: In an Oprah episode tackling America’s obesity problem, Dr. Oz helped 16 obese teens look for the emotional roots of their eating disorder.

ADA spokesperson David Grotto says he commends Oprah for noting that the obesity epidemic is not simply caused by overeating: “She digs behind what causes that overeating—and it’s not just because we are hungry all the time,” Grotto says.

3. Setting food boundaries: In January 2009, Oprah introduced her new diet plan, which included not eating after 7:30 p.m. Grotto says that though this strategy is not a direct solution for keeping weight in check, setting a cutoff time for eating does have some merit. “It’s about purposely reducing our intake at that hour when we are less active,” Grotto says. “But it really comes down to what ends up on the plate and in our stomachs at the end of the day.”

4. Limiting portion sizes: Oz says calorie restriction is the No. 1 way doctors say we can extend longevity, and caloric intake should be about getting the most “bang for your buck.” Similarly, the ADA’s Sandon said that a key concept to gaining a healthy relationship with food is to eat smaller portions throughout the day, including three meals and two snacks. “It does come down to … asking yourself, ‘Do I really need that much?’” Sandon says.

5. Dieting for life: Permanently altering habits requires mental readiness and proper planning, Katz reminds readers of O. He recommends making a list of the benefits to continuing a healthy eating plan to make dieting a true lifestyle change. Sandon also believes that a truly effective diet must last a lifetime: “Anyone can reduce calories for a certain amount of time, but if they haven’t really made a lifestyle change, rather just some rules and restrictions, then the weight loss doesn’t last over time,” Sandon says. “It comes down to changing the way you eat.”

The Incredible No Diet, No Fasting Lemon Detox That Works

without comments

An Incredibly Effective No Diet, No Fasting Lemon Detox

There are basic natural lifestyle habits which, once incorporated into your daily life, can make a tremendously positive difference to your health. Drinking lemon water is certainly one of them.

No article or research needed to convince me about this one, as I have been using lemon juice in one form or another for as long as I remember. But little did I know about the amazing health benefits of drinking water-diluted lemon juice daily!

In his classic 1939 book "Back to Eden", Jethro Kloss, the father of herbalists points out:
"Lemon is a wonderful stimulant to the liver and is a dissolvent of uric acid and other poisons, liquefies the bile, and is very good in cases of malaria. Sufferers of chronic rheumatism and gout will benefit by taking lemon juice, also those who have a tendency to bleed, uterine haemorrhages, etc"

He goes on to add: "… Lemon is an antiseptic, or is an agent that prevents sepsis [the presence of pathogenic bacteria] or putrefaction [decomposition of tissue]. It is also anti-scorbutic, a term meaning a remedy which will prevent disease and assist in cleansing the system of impurities."

A lot has been said lately about the lemon detox fast, which seems to yield great benefits. The fast consists in drinking lemon juice mixed with water and either maple syrup or honey with a sprinkle of cayenne pepper, for a week or 10 days. If your health allows it, you can add to that a laxative tea at night and you’re guaranteed a total cleansing effect, which must be done under the supervision of a qualified naturopath or herbalist.

lemon juice detox dietMost of those who I know have tried it, managed to put up with this extreme regime for maximum 4 days. I, for one, recommend a gentler lemon detox that I have been using daily for the last 8 months. It consists of drinking the juice of half a lemon, diluted in warm water, every night just before going to bed.

I have been drinking the lemon water every single night for the past eight months and the results are truly amazing. I live in a city where winters are harsh and long (Montreal, Canada) and I generally suffer from recurrent flu and cold symptoms all winter long… Not this winter!

I’ve also had to have my gallbladder removed and drinking the lemon juice has helped maintain my liver healthy. I no longer wake-up feeling tired and sluggish in the morning.
Lemon is not only a vitamin C rich citrus fruit and an immune system booster, it also acts as blood purifier and improves the body’s ability to get rid of toxins. When taken regularly it acts as a tonic to the liver and stimulates it to fulfil its daily digestive and cleansing functions. Lemon is also believed to help dissolve gallstones and is a superior body alkalizer.

My grandfather used to add a squeeze of lemon to his coffee and I remember thinking: How weird! Little did I know then that when lemon is mixed with coffee, it is thought to help treat malaria…It is also an effective headache remedy.

Some people drink the diluted lemon juice first thing in the morning. I used to do that too, and found it quite effective. However, a naturopath once told me that the body cleanses while at rest, so drinking the lemon water at night makes more sense, as it supports our inherent ability to detox.

For optimum health, I practice the Detox Bath daily alongside the lemon water cleanse. The Detox Bath is based on an ancestral bath technique created by Louis Kuhne of Leipzig in 1883 and is known to encourage toxin and waste elimination.

The Detox Bath’s working principle is to refresh the core area of the body during 10 minutes daily or longer, depending on your initial condition, and the results you seek to achieve. This process creates a vibration in the fascia (Interconnecting tissue covering all internal organs), which accelerates toxin and fat elimination.

As in all natural remedies, my only recommendation is be disciplined and regular. Don’t expect overnight miracles, they won’t happen. However, these natural additions to your lifestyle, like drinking the lemon juice water and practicing the Detox Bath, will surely support your body’s elimination capacity and enhance your health for a lifetime
